The successful restoration and refurbishment of the Parliamentary buildings resulted in a commission for the refurbishment of the Executive Wing complex known as The Beehive.
The brief called for retaining the protected exterior of the Sir Basil Spence design but completely redeveloping the interior to be more legible, lighter and to make better use of the available space. This included the complete renovation of the 10-storey office tower, including cabinet rooms, restaurants, public spaces, and office fitouts. In addition, all mechanical, electrical, fire and vertical transportation services were replaced and modernised to comply with modern standards.
To preserve and enhance the status and character of the building, the materials chosen for the additions and alterations were simple but of very high quality. A limited palette of timber veneers, marble, and translucent glass combine to reflect the original design intention.
