Warren and Mahoney’s winning competition design for the new Museum and Performing Arts Centre will be the signature building for the new cultural precinct for Te Awamutu.
The concept pays tribute to Te Awaumutu’s beautiful landscape. It will act as an anchor for the community and speak of both Maori and Pakeha history of the Waipa district. The building plan and external form considers a flourishing Koiri as a Tukutuku pattern with the building’s crafted form rising above the ground and gesturing over the township with its treasured ‘Uenuku’ embraced at its tip.
The design offers highly flexible spaces for public performance and display of artefacts and together the building will further strengthen Te Awamutu’s presence in New Zealand.
