For more than 20 years, the Skyline Gondola has been one of Queenstown’s premier tourist attractions. And from the restaurant and bar at the top, the views of the surrounding landscape are breathtaking.
The design philosophy behind the new fit-out of the restaurant and bar was to create a warm and inviting space that would allow visitors to relax and enjoy the hospitality on offer while taking in the spectacular scenery. The intention was to speak to both tourists and the highly discerning local market in a modern interpretation of the Queenstown vernacular.
Existing spaces were generally large and under used. These were redesigned to create a more intimate feel. The design process also addressed the functionality of the spaces and their ability to handle large crowds, since this is a key factor in the visitors’ experience.
Custom-designed carpets, richly-grained American walnut timber, crisp white stone, leather, and handmade mosaic tiles were used throughout to create a cohesive and refined feel. A warm, dark palate was chosen to throw the exterior views into relief. And furniture in bright oranges and greens was chosen to offset the dark chocolate tones and add a more playful element. Randomly spaced linear elements, repeated in various materials, were used to tie together disparate elements of the existing building.
