This premier South Island resort, located on the outskirts of Christchurch comprises apartments and villas arranged around tranquil water views and a golf course designed by Sir Bob Charles.
The language adopted for the buildings recalls the strong roof forms of the practice's early work, and utilises materials appropriate to the project's South Island location: stone, timber and white painted plaster are used in various configurations to set a tone of elegance and substance. Heavy walls, steeply pitched roofs, wide decks and deep reveals all contribute to an atmosphere of luxury in which all services are guaranteed to be appropriately expensive.
The surrounding lakeside sites have been successively developed for private housing within the environs of the golf course, and a subsequent second stage of hotel-use villas has recently been added.
Clearwater Resort provides an integrated and carefully constructed visitor experience that entirely belies the character of the flat and rather bleak farmland that formerly occupied the site.
