3M Headquarters

3M’s Albany headquarters building combines 2,800m² of workspace with a 700m² Innovation Gallery. 

3M’s interior fit-out brief had two main requirements.  First, 3M wanted an open workspace that was both functional and inviting.  And second, as a global leader in innovation, they wanted a space that would express their products and technologies in a truly innovative way. 

The chosen solution was ‘our place; our people; an open home’.

The open workspace delivers a home-like environment, using low cabinets to define individual and communal spaces, while still allowing ample natural light to flood across the floor plates. 

By contrast, the design direction of the Innovation Gallery employs dark walls and floor.  Against this backdrop, light boxes and other dramatic effects are used to showcase 3M’s past, present and future products.  An important aspect of the gallery space is its capacity to evolve and change with 3M’s changing requirements. 

The completed fit-out more than achieves the original objectives,  providing a relaxed-yet-stimulating working environment for staff, together with an opportunity for both clients and the public at large to experience 3M’s diverse range of highly-innovative products.
